Karon Beach Restaurants

Karon beach is one of the most popular travel destinations on Phuket and travelers will be able to choose from a wonderful selection of excellent restaurants.

I have lived on the island for a long period of time and I frequently dine there so I am able to recommend you some really great places where you can dine at during your holiday.

Mali Waterfront Seafood

Who doesn't enjoy some lovely fresh seafood from the Andaman? There is no better place to enjoy that then at the Mali Waterfront Seafood.  They also serve a variety of other Thai dishes as well as European cuisine. Special parties and events are frequently organized after hours at this eatery.

Buffalo Steakhouse

The Buffalo Steakhouse is one of the best eateries which tourists can visit if they feel like having a good steak. It is located next to the Waterfront Suites and they also have three other locations on the island.

Karon Café

This dining establishment is a long time favorite among the local expat community and is owned by Uncle Eric who is a very nice American chap. Their meat is flown in from Australia and they offer a free salad and soup bar to their clients.

Wildfire

This Karon restaurant is part of the Movenpick Resort & Spa which is located along the beach road. This venue offers an excellent selection of pizzas, Thai dishes and Brazilian Churrasco. This is the ideal establishment for those of you that would like to dine outside.

Long Beach Terrace

The Long Beach Terrace is part of the Thavorn Palm Beach Resort and is an excellent choice for those people that are looking for a very romantic restaurant and which offers great views over the water and excellent food. The Long Beach Terrace offers a wide selection of Italian specialties as well as fresh seafood.

Scuba Diving Resort Courses - Time to Get Wet

If you are not sure if you would like scuba diving, a scuba diving resort course could be the answer. You take a few hours (depending on the resort) and learn the basics of diving and then do a dive in the ocean.

Chances are the resort you are staying at in the Caribbean will offer this introductory course. If you're staying at an all inclusive Caribbean resort, scuba diving resort courses are sometimes included in the price. Even more of an incentive to try it out.

You will have to check your particular resort but scuba diving resort courses usually involve the following:

  • Fitting you with the scuba gear you'll need

  • A brief lecture on the basics of diving

  • Some pool time to learn how to use the equipment

  • A dive in the ocean either from shore or off a boat

The time spent on the lecture and in the pool can vary from one to several hours. Most I have seen and the ones my friends have taken typically lasted 2-3 hours.

Sometimes the open water dive portion of the course is included and sometimes you have to pay extra. My friends have paid anywhere from $0 to $45. Equipment is usually included in scuba diving resort courses.

You will (or should) at a minimum learn:

  • How to clear your mask

  • How to clear your ears as you descend

  • How to breathe underwater (a useful skill)

  • How to signal that you are OK

  • How to signal that you are out of air (which should not even be a possibility in scuba diving resort courses)

  • How to control your buoyancy so you are not bobbing up and down underwater (this takes practice)

You may be on information overload at first, but just relax. You will get it. Even if you don't understand everything, you can still have an enjoyable dive.

The instructor taking you out on your resort course dive should limit your dive to a depth of 30 or so feet. This way you will not get "the bends" if you surface too quickly. However some instructors are lax on enforcing this rule. You may have to be your own police. Most operators are responsible but always be aware of your depth.

My husband dove to almost 70 feet during one of his scuba diving resort courses (before he was certified). This is crazy. The risk of getting hurt is just too great. No one without the proper training should go that deep. He knows that now!

Don't let this scare you. The vast majority of people who take scuba diving resort courses do so without incident. Many go on to become certified divers. You could be next.

So if you are unsure how you would like scuba diving, resort courses are a great intro. You don't have to spend alot of time or money to get a feel for diving. A few hours and you'll probably know if you want to continue.

If you try it out on your next tropical vacation, I'm betting you won't regret it.

Good luck and enjoy,

Scuba Diving - An Underwater Adventure

There's nothing quite as mysterious as that which is contained underwater. Since the beginning of time, man has attempted to explore the deep of the sea; to investigate the secrets it holds. The modern equivalent of this exploration is scuba diving - a one-man voyage that can yield enormous adventure. But before you can dive, you must crawl, so to speak.

Deciding whether scuba diving is right for you depends solely on your personality. If you're someone who enjoys swimming, exploring, and adventurous activities, then chances are you will thoroughly enjoy scuba diving. However, in order to complete the training and scuba dive safely and successfully you must also be in good physical health.

If you have an interest in scuba diving you can get your feet wet through scuba instruction. In order to participate in scuba diving in open water, you must be trained and certified in scuba. You can find a host of training facilities in towns and cities throughout the world - regardless of whether or not you live near the ocean. Scuba diving instruction is given in indoor pools because of the controlled environment. But before water work even begins, students are given extensive classroom instruction to familiarize them with the essentials of scuba diving.

Once in the pool, the instructor will put the classroom instruction into practice, allowing students to practice techniques associated with scuba diving. Scuba diving instruction can take place over many weeks; it is imperative that students receive thorough training in order to ensure their safety. The culmination of training will be your certification in scuba diving. And you're on your way.

Reputable instructors can certainly point you in the direction of finding scuba gear that will be essential for your dives. Equipment necessary for scuba diving includes a wetsuit, flippers, eye and face mask, and oxygen tank and accessories. You also have the ability to rent equipment prior to any dives; just be sure that you are taken out by scuba professionals who are reputable and experienced.

Scuba diving can be an unbelievable experience that will forever transform you. Take the steps necessary to ensure your safety and the rest is pure enjoyment.

Ah! Colorful Beautiful Creatures - Wait, You Got to be Certified to Scuba Dive

Scuba Diving is one wonderful relaxing out of the world experience. How many hours have you seen the best camera footage in Discovery and national geographic and wondered what would it be like to be there physically? Atleast for me the TV time amounts roughly to 200 hours an year. Let me give an analogy for the experience you get. Have you had the relaxing 3 hours in a private beach with a towel on your eyes facing the mild sun and warm breeze in a tropical back-drop? How was it? Did you forget all the worries on the world, Scuba Diving just offers the same experience but just 10 times more rewarding? What makes this a more exciting "hobby" is the number of diving sites in the world. And the endless unique aquatic life each site has. It is never boring and in a while you may decide you are born in this world just for this. I have heard a lot of stories where people who started this as a pass-time have ended up in full time conservation and preservation efforts. Some others are documenting the different creatures and getting paid for the same. If you have photography skills the possibilities are endless.

There are a few folks who don't prepare for stuff they are going to do and end in helpless situation. Folks take their kids and family with the assumption if you know how to swim you can scuba dive. Well you are dealing with diving at good depths. This is high pressure game; you got to be in good health and should be physically fit for this experience. Along with that you should exhibit your sufficient knowledge to operate the scuba diving equipments. You are going to carry new equipments at places where the time to react is counted in seconds. So you will not be permitted to dive unless you hold the certification. This is done for your own safety. The certification process is a wonderful experience itself. You have a learning session and then a few pool sessions. At the end you should pass monitored some diving sessions. The whole process sometimes takes just 3 weekends. For people with a week you can learn a lot about scuba diving and get certified in just this one week.

There are many places where you can get certified and start this out of the world experience. You start out learning about the equipment and study materials. This sometimes could be done online mostly. The next phase is pool sessions with certified instructors. The next phase is the real diving tests. There may be many phases or sessions based on where you join and your requirements. Get certified; dive down to depths to get high on a rewarding experience. Don't miss out on this interesting, rewarding and good experience.

What to Do in Trang - Far South West Thailand

At first glance, you'd probably think the sleepy town of Muang Trang, or Trang, in far south west Thailand, is just full of rubber trees and not much else. But you'd be mistaken, because there's a lot of magic in this little Thai town, as you're about to discover.

But just to clarify, Trang has got a few rubber plantations. Well, actually, more than a few. More like as far as the eye can see, along with millions of looming palm oil trees too. But that's a story for another day. Let's talk about why Trang is a quite possibly an undiscovered paradise.

Firstly, Trang is so off the radar that not many tourists or travelers get there. And if they do, usually they're just passing through on their way to get some island snorkeling in and catch some laid back beach sun. However this is possibly what makes this Portuguese/Chinese influenced town so different.

With no real 'tourist' stuff such as you might find in nearby Phuket, Trang is as normal a Thai city as you'd ever get. Peek outside around 6 am and you'd see breakfast time is bustling and busy, monks doing their daily walking rounds, and a whole lot of folks on their way back from milking the heck out of those endless rubber trees.

About 30 minutes outside the town you're confronted with rock scattered waterfalls winding their way down the mountains, huge underground caves that seem to go on forever, and the occasional fluorescent green rice field. Go the other way and it's all beach. Maybe not the perfect white sand beaches you'd imagine, but still swimmable and great for exploring.

So, although it looks smallish on the map, Trang has its share of delights and a few big secrets too. Of course, the best way to get a feel for it is to go there and stay for a week or two. That way you'll know exactly what I'm talking about!

Scuba Diving in the Perhentian Islands - A Rare Piece of Paradise in Malaysia

The crystal clear waters and brilliant white sandy beaches of the Perhentian Islands in Malaysia have for many years captured the hearts and imaginations of the backpackers and travelers who passed through. Recent years however have seen a different type of traveler coming to the Perhentian Islands, as their reputation as a premier diving destination has slowly increased amongst the scuba diving community.

In fact it would be fair to say that a large amount of the success of the Perhentian Islands as a scuba diving location should be attributed to the neighboring Thailand, and the dive resorts of Koh Tao, Phuket and Koh Samui. Large numbers of travelers who have learned to scuba dive in the larger Thai resorts often find themselves gravitating to the natural beauty of the Perhentian Islands. Looking for one last dive before the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur and Singapore!

The Perhentian Islands comprise of Pulau Perhentian Kecil and Pulau Perhentian Besar, and are located approximately 20 kilometers off the coast of Malaysia. Offering what can only be described as a slice of paradise, the palm fringed beaches encircle these tropical islands, whilst the clear blue waters hide a wealth of marine and coral life below.

The scuba diving in the Perhentian Islands is of a high standard, and a wide range of dive sites has meant that the islands have become a popular destination for people looking to take a scuba diving course. There are approximately ten major dive sites which are regularly visited by the dive centers in the Perhentian Islands. Of these, Tokong Laut (Temple of the Sea) is widely acknowledged as being the best dive site on the islands. A large rocky outcrop of boulders just off the northwest coast of Perhentian Kecil offers some of the best examples of soft coral formations in the region. This carpet of stunning soft corals provides a home to a wide variety of marine life including kingfish, barracuda, nurse sharks and black tip sharks.

For fans of wreck diving, there are two excellent dive sites in the Perhentian Islands. The Sugar Wreck, a 90 meter cargo ship which sank in 2000, and the Vietnamese Wreck were it is still possible to dive inside the wreck itself.

If you are planning to go scuba diving in the Perhentian Islands, the best time to visit is between April to October, when both the visibility and weather are at their most favorable. November to March sees the monsoon season, when the weather becomes poor and access to and from the islands becomes limited due to the rough seas.

The Perhentian Islands offer superb scuba diving, and the shallow nature of the dive sites here make it a good choice for the novice or more inexperienced scuba diver. However what makes the islands so very special is their stunning natural beauty and undeveloped landscapes. You truly feel as though you are diving in your very own piece of paradise!

Dating Asian Ladies - Thai Girls Part 1

For those of you who, like me, are attracted to Asian ladies, there are a few things that can help pave the rocky road to a happy and successful relationship. As with any relationship, there are ups and downs, good times and challenging times, but these fluctuations can appear to be much more dramatic and intense with Asian girls. It can sometimes feel as if we are on a roller coaster. The ride is exhilarating, passionate and rewarding and sometimes painfully sobering. One thing that can be said is it is not boring! In this first installment, I want to examine and point out some of my observations and experiences with the lovely ladies of Thailand and hopefully help others to navigate this exotic and treacherous path.

Ahh, the thrill and excitement of being in Thailand, the weather is hot, the food is hot, and oh my, the ladies. It has been said that Thai women are the most beautiful ladies in the world. This of course is subjective and that brings me to my first and maybe most important point about dating Thai ladies or any lady for that matter. It is all subjective, personal, and unique. There can be no absolute 'understanding' of Thai ladies. They are all individual, unique and constantly changing. We can discuss some general knowledge about the environment, culture, and common results of how these manifest in the ladies, but we must never forget for one instant that every lady is different. This cannot be emphasized enough. The moment we start generalizing and placing any person into a box of our own conceptions is the beginning of the end. We will never be dealing directly with the other person but rather dealing only with our own limited preconceptions. While many Thai ladies have some things in common, I have found them to be quite unique individuals and I need to almost throw away everything I thought I had learned before when meeting a new girl. So please keep this in mind and it will help with all of your relationships.

The family. The first thing to understand about Thai girls is the fierce loyalty and service they give to their family. Thai girls, especially the eldest sister are bound to take care of their parents and family in any way they can. As a potential partner we must understand this deep bond and commitment. We will ALWAYS be second, and the family will be first. If we can understand and accept this, it will go a long way towards a successful relationship. To underline this loyalty and desire to repay their parents and take care of the family I like to quote a statement made by a friend of mine who works in the nightlife industry. To put it into context, I was having a conversation and trying to convince her that she should take a job for less money working at a factory and stop working in the bars. Her reply, without a moment of hesitation was 'My body is not for me, my body is not for a man, my body is for my mother. I must do what I can to take care of my mother. This body is not mine, this body is my mothers.' When I heard this I was floored. I was new to Thailand and Asia and it left me speechless. For all the crazy media hype about girls forced into prostitution and human smuggling, my direct experience from knowing many Thai people is that the mothers are often the biggest pimps, sending their girls to Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya or other destinations to make money. These girls often live quite cheaply, saving every Baht so they can send it home to their mothers. Don't take my word for it, come here and interview a few ladies yourself. Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, this is obviously an extreme example but it illuminates the depth of respect and loyalty that Thai girls have for their family, especially their parents. We can only hope to be second best. We will never be a girls number one concern. If it comes down to a decision either for you or for her family, you will lose every time! Understanding this from the beginning, we can then accept it and make the best of it. This being said, the best way of dealing with this, once you are sure you want to make a commitment to a girl, is to embrace her family 100%. This is a whole other ballgame and beyond the scope of this article, but it can be an adventure to say the least.

The second point that I feel is necessary to understand is money. Asia is not the west. We often forget this and try to apply western ideals and customs in dealing with Asian people. Now I am not talking about prostitutes, massage girls or bar girls here when I say that money is very important to Asian ladies. The so called 'good girls' are also after money. Now now, don't get excited. Remember we cannot apply our limited western preconceptions to life in Asia. The parents will want their girl to marry a man that has enough money, A man that can take care of her and the family. This is displayed in the old Thai tradition of 'Sin sot' or what we would call a dowry. It is often used as a display of the man's ability to provide and show his wealth, or readiness to marry. I know of many cases where the sin sot was promptly returned to the man, or put into a joint account owned by the couple or where the Thai family provided either land or a house or both. Now before we get all pious, and look down upon Asians for being so materialistic and only wanting us for our money, we need to take a second and think about the average British or American girl. They also want to marry a rich man, but the way of dealing with this is not as blatant, and in my opinion not as 'honest'. Thai girls can be very practical. If we do not put our cultural blinders aside, we can be easily put off and angered by the 'honesty' displayed in this regard. In Asia, there is no wall dividing sex, dating, marriage and $$-money. Girls are raised in this culture to look at these things together, as one, without the need to separate them out like we do in the west. An attractive girl will likely find a rich husband. Sexual market value and attractiveness are seen in terms of money. In Asia, this is not seen as a bad thing, or with any judgment. We cannot judge Asian people for mixing love and money so loosely if we are to find happiness here. I prefer to think of it as a more honest and open approach. So don't be surprised if your beloved 'teerak' decides to leave you because you don't have enough money. It is not necessarily that she doesn't love you, just that love and money are not distinguished so clearly here like they are in the west. The second part of this is to understand that Thai people view westerners as being rich. We will get charged more money for the same services and goods, because the common perception is that we have more money than the Thai people. So even if you are like me, and don't have much money, you will be perceived as rich, and expected to pay and help out, and it is likely, as said before, that a girl might leave you if you don't soon show some ability to generate affluence. I know of situations where the girl was even in love with a guy, but here parents would not allow her to marry him because he did not have enough money or a good job. Back to rule number one; she will of course listen to and follow her parents first, and 'dump the chump' so to speak in a 'Bangkok second'! It can be a harsh reality here. In this culture you cannot be expecting much success in finding a good wife if you have limited sexual market value (money). That is the cold hard reality. Now we all know of many worthless Thai guys that are 100% supported by the hard working and loyal wife. They spend the days drinking and gambling and whoring, not working, while the wife or girlfriend works to give him money, Strange but quite true. This will not happen with western men. We are farang-foreigners, and as farang are perceived to be rich, a Thai girl would lose face by having a farang boyfriend or husband that was down on his luck so to speak. Farang are often a status symbol for Thai girls and they are proud to take you back to the village and show you off. Show off the ATM fish they have landed and how they now live the good life. If you cannot play this role and need to pinch every Baht, then your prospects will be limited and short term. In Thailand, it is expected that the man is ready (has $$) to have a girlfriend or wife or he shouldn't be trying to date. As I said before, every girl is unique and different. I have had some success with Thai girls while living here while I was dirt poor. They will sometimes be happy to go eat 'street noodles' (15-25 Baht) with you every day, but this is the exception, not the rule and I am sure the parents would not approve and would want their daughter to be dating a man with more money. It is the same situation as in the west or the world for that matter, just a more honest and 'in your face' way of dealing with it.

These two points are the biggies, the short 'must know' list for dating a Thai girl. There are countless other cultural and perceptual differences that can be challenging in day to day life with your teerak (darling), but in my opinion they are less important and generally not 'show stoppers'. In fact, many of these differences you will find to be quite nice. Thai ladies can often be the most attentive and caring mates you will ever meet. In this country, Thai men live like Kings in their house. Thai girls are taught to take care of a man, and groomed from an early age on how to cook, and clean, and fold shirts, and really take care and keep the husband happy. A few examples I can think of from my previous girlfriends are things like nail clipping or zit popping on your back, or massages. I can't imagine how impossible it would be to get the common American girl to cut your finger and toenails for you, much less pop the zits on your back! I did not know what to say when a former Thai girlfriend started doing these things for me. How many western ladies in this generation actually cook and clean and take of their man? No, they want a maid, or you should cook for them, or take them out to dinner. Not in Thailand, many ladies I have dated were very anxious to show me that they can cook, and when they visit your apartment they will naturally start to clean it up for you and fold your clothes. I remember a few years ago, walking into the bathroom one morning feeling all groggy from sleep. I walked up to the bathroom sink and started to reach for my toothbrush and noticed it already had toothpaste on it! My teerak had prepared my toothbrush for me so when I woke up it was waiting for me to use. Try to get the common bitchy feminist western girl to do that one. I dare ya! I will stand back a safe distance and watch! No, Thai girls are very smart, they know they will get what they want by being nice, feminine, and taking care of their mans needs.

So I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the plunge and experience what it is like dating a good Thai girl. I would strongly suggest not trying to make a common bargirl into a loyal wife when there are so many nice girls that are dying to meet a good farang man. It is simply not worth the hassle and heartaches, why add more problems to what can already be a challenging situation. So, keep your preconceptions, western ideals, and judgments in check, take a dose of patience, and keep an open mind and I am sure you will not regret it. The ride may be a little bumpy here and there, but it is worth the price of admission.

Bringing Western Values to Thailand

More and more westerners are making Thailand their home. We all bring with us our own set of core values deeply rooted from our upbringings and the societies from which we come. They are the rules by which we live our lives; the principles and moral guidelines that govern our actions and decision making process. We do not all have the same set of values but whatever values we hold, the likelihood is they are different to those held in Thailand.

Many ex-pats in Thailand are the breadwinners for their families, own their own businesses or are employed in management positions. We therefore often find ourselves in a position of authority or influence over Thai people. This leads us to a dilemma. To what extent should we enforce our own set of western values onto the Thai people over whom we have influence?

I greatly respect and enjoy Thai culture. I happily embrace many of the values of my new homeland. However, I also have my own set of values and I cannot leave them all behind just because I am now in Thailand. Many of them are too deeply entrenched in my psyche. Enforcing my set of western values into my life inevitably means also forcing them into my wife's life. My wife is Thai and does not always believe in the same things I do.

A good example of westerners and Thais holding contrasting values is the subject of road safety. Most Thais do not believe in wearing crash helmets or seatbelts. They usually do wear them but they do so to avoid a police fine rather than for the sake of safety. Westerners generally accept that safety precautions are a good idea. We may not like our governments enforcing them on us by law but still we believe in the principle of taking safety precautions.

It is easy to understand the reasons for this difference in outlook. Thais are fatalistic. It is part of their Buddhist religion. They believe that what will be, will be. If something is going to happen then it will happen and there is little you can do about it. In the west, we believe in controlling our own destinies. We believe our actions have implications that will affect future actions.

So we have a possible cause of contention. I know some ex-pat westerners who will not start their car until all their passengers have put on their seatbelts. I know others who will not take pillion passengers on their motorbike unless they wear a helmet. These are not only commonly held western safety principles but also laws of Thailand. But still these westerners are forcing their values on Thais who do not hold the same values. We are coming to their country and forcing them to act like us. Is this right?

I have no doubt that our western outlook is the right one on this subject. I am sure most accidents are avoidable and if not you can at least take safety precautions to reduce their impact. However, that is not the point. It is not a question of who is right or wrong but whether it is right to force western values on people in our host nation who do not believe in them. One of my moral beliefs is that it is wrong to force my beliefs on other people. So I take the attitude that if people want to ride in my car or on my motorbike without taking safety precautions then it is their choice.

But what if you are responsible for that person's safety? What if that person is a child?

When we had our first child I assumed we would buy a baby seat for the car. It is what we would do in the west. My wife was surprised when I suggested we go shopping for such an item. Why would we want to strap our baby into the back of the car? She would hold the baby while I drove.

I still believed a baby seat was a good idea so we went shopping. Of course, you will not find baby seats in most Thai shops. They are something most Thais would not think of buying. We went to look at the selection in Robinsons Department Store. They were expensive and they all needed rear seatbelts to attach them. Our car does not even have rear seatbelts so as well as buying the baby seat we would also have to get the car modified. At this point I accepted we would not buy one.

I still believed we needed one but it was just proving too hard working against the Thai belief that we didn't. Even the sales girls agreed it wasn't necessary.

There are many ways that westerners settling in Thailand bring parts of their home country's lifestyle with them. In Phuket we can get western style houses, furniture, kitchens, appliances and satellite TV. I love Thai food and in our household we eat Thai food most of the time but still sometimes I want to eat western food. That will never be a problem in Phuket.

There is nothing wrong with building your own little piece of home in your new country if that is what you want. The problem is when your home values start invading the lives of Thai people who do not want them.

Western culture is very invasive. We see western fast food outlets popping up all over Thailand. High profile advertising campaigns make them seem trendy and exciting ignoring the fact that the food is not as good or nutritious as the local fare. The result is lots of little fat Thai children. New 7-eleven convenience stores are popping up in every neighbourhood while the local Thai grocery stores close. The Christian religion has a history of vigorously promoting itself in non-Christian countries. The United States has a policy of promoting 'the American way' across the globe.

We seem to have an ingrained belief in our own rightness. We do not easily accept other nation's cultures or values. We expect them to change to be more like us. It is an issue about which we need to be careful when living in another culture. We do not need to lose our own identities and values but we do need to find a way to integrate them into our lives without smothering the local culture or offending local people.

Hot Hotel Destinations on the Cheap

There's something to be said about getting away from it all -- even if just for a weekend. Checking into a fabulous hotel and rejuvenating is one of the best experiences in life.

But it's a common misconception that high quality hotels have to be expensive. Surprisingly there are hotel discounts in the hottest destinations if you know where to look. Here are just a few hot hotel destinations on the cheap.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Minneapolis is quickly becoming a city of hipsters. The downtown area is filled with trendy hotels, world class dining, and fabulous shopping. Let's not forget that Minneapolis is home to the Mall of America, where you can find any store imaginable. Plan a weekend of shopping in Minneapolis and you will not be disappointed.

Daytona Beach, Florida

While most Europeans head for the pleasures of Orlando, Americans know the hottest hotel destination in Florida is Daytona Beach, a long time favorite of "Spring Breakers". If you're looking for fun in the sun with a bit of alcohol and hot bodies mixed in, then Daytona is the destination for you. However, during the summer and winter the resort becomes surprisingly family friendly. Beach front hotels in Daytona Beach abound, and if you book with the right company, are surprisingly some of the best cheap hotel deals in the state of Florida.

New York City, New York

The Big Apple -- the city so good they named it twice -- is a must-see destination for any traveler. With an unrivalled variety of restaurants, iconic buildings, top quality shopping, and cultural exhibits no one will be bored in New York City. Fortunately, NYC has plenty of hotel rooms that will exceed your expectations in quality and location. Whether you want to stay in Times Square or near the Theatre District, you will have no problem finding high quality cheap hotels in New York, if you know where to look.

Las Vegas, Nevada

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, so there is no reason to tell any of your friends how cheap you're fabulous Las Vegas hotel room really was. A cheap hotel room in Vegas is a sinful right of all savvy Las Vegas visitors, and it gives you more money to play the tables. You can easily find discount hotels everywhere in downtown Las Vegas and the famous Las Vegas Strip, especially with dramatic cost-cutting as the resorts vie to win back customers from other gambling attractions. And no matter where you stay you're guaranteed a vacation you'll never forget.

A Thai Staycation in Edinburgh!

Although everyone is laothed to mention the dreaded credit crunch lately it has highlighted a relatively new act...no, not a new entry in the Karma Sutra...no, I'm talking about the staycation! What is a 'staycation'? I hear you ask. Well, it's an American term combining 'stay' and 'vacation' i.e stay at home vacation. It's one of those annoying new words but the theory behind it is good. Rather than spending a fortune on a holiday to say, a nice hot beach Thailand you would bring Thailand to your home (or local area at least) and save some of that precious cash. So, I've put together a rough guide on having a staycation and using my example of Thailand so here goes; Chill 'oot - What better way to get into the relaxed way of life than to treat yourself to a Thai massage. With roots in Yoga, Ayurvedic medicine and Buddhism , a Thai massage involves stretching and massage on a mat and leaves you feeling relaxed both inside and out!

Bring on the heat - While tropical heat may not be the norm for the rest of the world you should be able to recreate the feeling by visiting somewhere tropical instead. Try butterfly world in Edinburgh for exotic insects and clammy heat. Better yet, wear shorts and t-shirt whever the weather outside (well you wouldn't wear jeans and UGG boots in Phuket would you!? Thai food - That main pull for a holiday location for me has got to be the food.

I don't want to visit a country only to immediately hunt down bacon and eggs when I could be having tapas, authentic curries or even kangaroo! Why should your staycation be any different? For authentic Thai food, grab the family and head to the Thai Orchid Restaurant just off the Royal Mile. With a huge Buddha at the door and Oriental waitresses you will be transported to Thailand from the moment you walk through the door.

If after your massage you just want to unwind at home then why not learn to cook some Thai food for yourself? The Thai Orchid restaurant, Edinburgh has a set of authentic Thai recipes on its website for you to try at home. Each recipe has been cooked in the restaurant and includes some family favourites so you can be sure you are getting something 'real'. So that's it, some ideas for a staycation in Edinburgh. While it may not be quite the same as hot-footing it over to Thailand at least you save not only the hard earned pennies but you gain yourself the thirteen hours you would otherwise spend travelling - you can't lose!

Safest Airlines in the World

Many air travelers wonder what exactly are the safest airlines to use when they travel. Here are the winners according to several criteria:

Safest Airlines

Likely the most important criteria for a safe airline is the amount of fatalities the airline has over a period of recent years. This may be the best way to judge the record of maintenance but also of personnel, including pilots and engineers.

Qantas is a name well known to those interested in airline safety. Based out of Sydney, Australia, Qantas safety rating has plummeted as of late, but still ranks fairly high among other airlines of the world in terms of overall safety.

Other airlines considered to be most safe in terms of least passenger fatalities include America West, EasyJet, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, North American Airlines, Southwest and Virgin Atlantic. In addition, many smaller, regional carriers are among the safest airlines including Ireland's national carrier, Aer Lingus, Air Europe, Air Jamaica, Austria Airlines, BahamasAir, Canadian North, Corsair, Estonian Air, Eurowings, EVA Air, Finnair, Frontier Airlines, Fujian Airlines, Icelandair, Midway Airlines, National Jet Italia, Novair, Ozark Airlines, Portugalia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Oman Air, Sahara Airlines, Shandong Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, Spanair, Syrian Air, Sun Country Airlines, TransAsia Airways, Tunisair, Ukraine International, Uzbekistan Airways and WestJet Airlines.

It's interesting to note that many smaller carriers may have a safer reputation than larger carriers simply because of the vastly larger amount of flights that larger carriers have each day. Quite simply, the more flights, the more chance that something will go wrong.

Most Secure Airline

El Al airlines, Israel's national airlines, is considered to be the world's most secure airline company. This is due to their tight security measures and protocols used to prevent terrorism and hijackings on their planes. Founded in 1948, El Al airlines has a fleet of over 30 planes. El Al has prevented and stopped numerous attacks on their airlines from terrorists and has also managed to stop hijackers. El Al scrutinizes and interviews every passenger prior to boarding. Also, plain clothes security officers as well as uniformed officers patrol the areas where passengers gather to board.

Worst Airlines

In addition to safe airlines, there are also known bad airlines. These include Indonesia Airlines, Ukraine's Volare Air, Phuket Airlines from Thailand and North Korea's Air Kyo. The criteria used for worst airlines is the number of aircraft lost, so it's a good idea to stay away from these airlines.
